Moselle River 1944 on the way to the 60th Anniversary
of the Liberation.
The festivities destined to commemorate the liberation
of the villages in the Metzervisse canton in November
2004 have taken on a special significance with the
founding of the Moselle River 1944 Association.
On
the initiative of Pascal Moretti of the Metzervisse
police department, supported by several history enthusiasts
and René Arnould, Mayor of the chief town
in the canton, that the inaugural meeting of the
Moselle River 1944 Association was held, to present
the plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of
the liberation of the communes in the canton. The
meeting room at the Metzervisse town hall was only
just large enough to accomodate the more then eighty
persons who attended, including Raymond Tresse, President
of the Thionville branch of Souvenir Francais, Mr
Thompson, superintendant of the US war cemetery at
St. Avold who had made the journey specially, René Rech
of the Souvenir Association of Kedange and numerous
elected officials from the canton as well persons
interested in the project.
The proceedings commenced
with an audio visual presentation of the association’s
aims and objectives, “created to honour the
sacrifices of the American soldiers made for our
freedom, to do everything possible to perpetuate
the remembrance of that sacrifice by the men of the
90th and 95th US Divisions on the soil of the Moselle
during the Second World War; especially after the
crossing of the river, to express the gratitude of
those who were liberated, to render homage to the
liberators, maintain he friendship between France
and the United States and finally to ensure the welcoming
of US veterans and their families”.
Exhibition
Several contemporary photos illustrated
Mr Moretti's presentation which he used to launch
an appeal to
anyone having photos of the period of the Occupation
and Liberation in their possession to contact their
mayor with a view to making them available for a
major exhibition which will take place between 12
and 14 November 1944 at the Kedange-sur-Canner high
school and will then become a travelling exhibition. "This
is just one facet of the commemoration of the events
that left an indelible impression on the history
of our region", the initiator of the project
continued.
It is also intended that several dozen veterans of
the 90th and 95th Divisions will come to France to
take par in this historic occasion, the dedication
of a memorial on the banks of the Moselle at one
of the places where the crossing was made, as well
as another at the Hackenberg fort, , the creation
of a web site, the publication of a book by Anthony
Kemp, the author of the definitive "Lorraine
Album Memorial", an exhibition of postage stamps
of the period and parades of historic military vehicles.
Other ideas are being worked on.
The election of the committee took place by a show
of hands, and the president elect, Pascal Moretti
brought the meeting to a close by stating - "we
have twenty two months to mount the project and if
possible to perpetuate it. We know that a large number
of people will join us in bringing this enterprise
to fruition".
